Coastal Path

The Isle of Wight Coastal Path Under Threat

The Marine and Coastal act 2010 is planned to implement a coastal path and coastal access around the entire English coast over the next 10 years.

The implementation of the Coastal Access Act is under threat due to likely government cuts.

The Island Coastal path is not a true coastal trail - 54% of it is either inland or follows a public road. Our survey shows that:

                                    Coastal 32.5 miles

                                    Inland 20 miles

                                    Road 18.25 miles

                                    Total 70.75 miles

An Island Coastal Trail will create jobs and support our delicate economy. We must say no to coastal cuts.

The all-England coastal path is at risk, due to central and local government spending cuts. To cut the budget for the path would be very short-sighted  because the coastal trail could bring in millions per year to the rural  economy, create job opportunities and have many other long-reaching benefits, such as reducing the strain on the NHS by encouraging a more  healthy society. We all have a strong emotional connection to the coast and as an island nation it is part of our heritage to enjoy the recreational opportunities it offers - including walking, cycling, surfing, climbing, and of course building sand-castles!

Stand up for your heritage and your coastline - take action by emailing the media to tell them why the coast is important for the economy and for you.

We can all spread the word by talking to fellow ramblers, friends and family about the threat to the act's implementation and ask them to contact the County Press, County Councillors, and Andrew Turner our IOW Member of Parliament to express their concerns.
